Finite-size effects, demographic noise, and ecosystem dynamics

Strong positive feedback is considered a necessary condition to observe abrupt shifts of ecosystems. A few previous studies have shown that demographic noise -- arising from the probabilistic and discrete nature birth death processes in finite systems makes transitions gradual or continuous. In this paper, we show may, fact, promote would otherwise continuous transitions. We present our methods results tutorial-like format. begin with simple spatially-explicit individual-based model local births deaths influenced by processes. then derive stochastic differential equation describes how rules scale population dynamics. The infinite-size well-mixed limit SDE for consistent mean-field models regime-shifts. Finally, analytically as consequence noise, finite-size can undergo even weak interactions. Numerical simulations confirm prediction. Thus, predict small-sized populations ecosystems may collapse when larger - same microscopic interactions smooth response environmental stress.
